Dear Friends:
This just came in from our friends at the IAFI, president Andy Marks. It looks like we have won the (present) battle.
NEWS FROM ENGLAND:
Members of Parliament in the UK have rejected the proposed UCU boycott. On July 19, 2007 , as reported in the press
release of www.Stoptheboycott.org "Conservative, Liberal Democrats and Labour MPs from all sides of House stood up
and condemned the University and Colleges Union's proposed boycott of Israeli Academic Institutions, in a debate in the
House of Commons. In a debate on Anti Semitism, the MPs slammed the proposed boycott labeling it as "unacceptable",
questioning the motives on singling out Israel and expressed fears for Jewish students on British campuses."
The University of Cambridge has announced its opposition to the planned boycott of Israeli academic institutions. At its
Council meeting on 23 July, the University's unanimously endorsed the following statement: "UCU members are free to
debate the pros and cons of an institutional boycott of Israeli universities. Universities UK, however, would oppose any such
boycott as this would be inimical to academic freedom, including the freedom of academics to collaborate with other
academics, regardless of nationality or location."
Then Prime Minister, Tony Blair, spoke to the British Parliament on June 6, 2007 and strongly urged the UCU to abandon
its efforts to boycott Israel. Not only would it "undermine academic freedoms," said Blair, but it would be "absolutely no good
for the peace process." For a more complete news story on Mr. Blair's speech, click here.
"The members of Imperial College UCU have voted overwhelmingly - by more than five-to-one - to reject Motion 30 - the
boycott of Israeli academic institutions," said Imperial UCU member and leading UK academic Michael J. McGarvey, Reader
in Molecular Virology at Imperial's Division of Medicine.
The British Medical Association has taken a stand against the boycott. http://iafi-israel.org/BreakingNews61707.html
