Stanley Nattel - FIHS Board Member
Dr. Nattel obtained an MDCM from McGill University (Montreal) in 1974 and then trained in Internal
Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology (McGill University), Cardiology (University of Indiana) and
Physiology (University of Pennsylvania). He has been on faculty at McGill University since 1981 and
University of Montreal since 1987, where he is presently Professor of Medicine and Paul-David Chair in
Cardiovascular Electrophysiology. Dr Nattel has been a staff cardiologist at the Montreal Heart Institute
since 1987, where he served as Scientific Director of the Research Center between 1990 and 2004.
His research interests are primarily in clinically-relevant cardiac electrophysiology, particularly as pertains to the
development of novel mechanistically-based therapeutic approaches to cardiac arrhythmias. His most important
contributions have been in the understanding of the basic physiology, pharmacology, biophysics and molecular biology of
cardiac ion channels and in the appreciation of the pathophysiology of cardiac arrhythmias at the molecular and systems
biology levels. His laboratory has been at the forefront of the development of many new antiarrhythmic drugs and novel
drug targets and has been involved in extensive partnerships with the innovative pharmaceutical industry sector.
